Buffalo Gap was named as such because it was a pass in the Callahan Divide through which buffalo once traveled. It was the seat of Taylor County before the county seat moved to nearby Abilene.

Abilene was established by cattlemen as a stock shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 and was named after Abilene, Kansas, which served as the original endpoint of the Chisholm Trail.

The town's economy was heavily based in cattle production until the last quarter of the 20th century, when it began to move into petroleum after oil was struck in 1981.
